Many companies in the processing industry, as well as craft and manufacturing companies, associate the process of chrome plating with a procedure that involves a high expenditure of material, time and, above all, costs. This outdated view equates chrome plating with electroplating.

To put it bluntly: this idea is outdated and therefore simply wrong!

We spoke to the founder and owner of Verchromen24, Uli Kuitkowski, who explained to us the sensational new approaches Verchromen24 is taking to chrome plate workpieces quickly, cheaply and to a high standard of quality.

Mr Kuitkowski, what makes your company ‘Verchromen24’ different and what makes it so easy, good and affordable for customers to trust the ‘Verchromen24’ concept?

To put it simply: we have replaced the previous processes of electrolysis and galvanisation with chemical chrome plating. Chrome plating is a form of surface treatment. Electrolysis plays an essential role in chrome plating. Galvanisation follows a similar process. Electrolysis is a process in which electricity is used to separate different components of metal and make them conductive. Galvanising also uses the electrochemical separation of metallic objects with the aim of making them conductive. However, both processes are dependent on the base metal to be processed and are also material- and time-intensive.

Does this mean that Verchromen24 is also able to chrome-plate non-metallic objects?

Exactly. We have broken new ground here with surprisingly simple methods. The difficult and time-consuming – and ultimately expensive for the customer – process of electrolysis has been replaced by chemical chrome plating. With chemical chrome plating, it is no longer important whether an object is conductive or not, as is essential with electrolysis or galvanising. For this reason, chromium plating is no longer limited to metal as a base material. This means we can also coat wood, plastic, stone or any other material with chromium. We have even succeeded in chromium plating glass and hard rubber. To do this, we use the chemical chromium plating process.

How exactly do you do that – what happens during chemical chrome plating?

Chemical chrome plating is carried out in three steps: First, the workpieces are cleaned. As with many other processes, thorough and proper preparation of the workpieces to be chrome-plated is essential. All impurities are carefully and thoroughly removed, as otherwise the end result will not have the desired mirror-smooth surface. Second, the material is treated in a kiln. First, a primer is applied, which is dried at high temperatures in the kiln. Finally, metallisation takes place. To do this, the piece to be chrome-plated is coated with a thin layer of gold or chrome,

just as the customer desires. I used to be annoyed that chrome plating was so difficult and spent a long time tinkering with a more effective solution. Now that solution is here – the days of high costs and difficult chrome plating production are finally a thing of the past.

Tell us a few things about yourself and your company.

Gladly! I have been working in the field of electroplating and metallisation for several decades. Over the last 10 years, I have been intensively involved in the field of surface finishing. I have specialised in developing and distributing chrome plating systems for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as the associated chrome components. I also attach great importance to having our trained staff demonstrate the products to customers and to continuing to provide professional support to customers after their purchase.

To this end, we operate a network of suppliers, employees and manufacturers in Italy, Germany and Spain. This allows us – and ultimately our customers – to benefit from the prevailing conditions throughout Europe. Our range of services with our equipment for small and large companies covers all requirements. Even for companies that only manufacture small quantities or want to outsource their operations, we provide our own partner network as an intermediary.

Mr Kuitkowski, if you had three wishes, what would they be?

(Laughs) I hope you mean professionally… My knowledge of chemical chrome plating is still far too limited. So I would like to see many more companies aware of our solution. Secondly, I would love for many customers to learn about our range of services, and thirdly – but not least – I will fulfil my heart’s desire and use our knowledge to appear at industrial trade fairs around the world to popularise chemical chrome plating.
